Do any children do any Community Service, if so do they attend public school or are they home schooled?

Our kids have. They're homeschooled

-volunteering at the library
-assisting teachers in our co-op
-various things at our UU church
- a performance troupe for a couple of years that went around to assisted living facilities putting on shows
-organized beach or park clean-ups
-food and clothing drives

Most homeschoolers I know, especially by the time they reach pre-teen years, tend to do a lot of community service things because they have an easy schedule to fit it in-- and it's a great educational experience.

To answer the question, I know of MANY children who participate in community service, both public schooled and home schooled as well as private schooled. Some schools (public and private) require a certain number of community service hours in order for a student to graduate.

My children (ages 9 and 7) are homeschooled. They have done community service projects through our church, homeschool association, their scout troop/pack, and just as individuals and family. I believe it is an important thing to teach our children-that we need to give back to our community.

To respond to the answerer who stated that homeschoolers are not involved in many outside activities and have fewer friends-your ignorance is astounding. Read above-my homeschooled children are involved in church, a homeschool association, scouts, 4H, sports. They take various community classes, attend camp, etc. Homeschooling gives us an increased opportunity to particpate in extra curricular activities, because we have more time. Both of my children have a number of close friends, a seemingly endless number of acquaintances that they socialize with on a regular basis.

All families; home schooled, or otherwise have many volunteer opportunities, almost all our children participate, even the younger ones.
It is a regular part of teaching children how important it is to be involved in their communities.
Volunteering is definitively not limited to those who attend schools, and you do not have to be plugged in; it is open to anyone with a servants heart.
Examples:
Local food ministries, serving lunch at the rescue missions, helping in nursing homes, serving as summer camp leaders, and counselors, joining groups like the scouts, and the Civil Air Patrol; volunteering for community projects is just a small part of their duties, helping the elderly in your neighborhood, and Church with lawns, Church programs, Sunday school, and youth group helpers; the list can be endless.
They do this because they want too, and as an added benefit they receive volunteer credit hours for college.

Children do community service allt he time...ever heard of Girls Scouts, or Boy Scouts? They have a lot of community service in their activities. Homeschoolers may have more opportunity to do community service, since they are home during the day more often. My kids have served helping the homesless, have gone to nursing homes, and other activities. It's not exclusive to any one educational group, though.

ANYONE CAN! It can either be required by school or by a parent. I have done both as a teacher and as a mother. I work at a Catholic Elementary school and kids as young as 6 are doing community service. Anyone can do it. There are many great things young ones can do;
collecting stuff for a specific cause-
+blankets for Children's Services,
+toothbrushes for homeless shelters,
+pull tabs from cola cans and soup cans for Ronald McDonald House-
+stuffed animals for the fire department. (My son did this one when he was 8, it was a great way to get rid of all those stuffed animals:) )
+ another one my son did was collect books for lower income school's library's
Anything that your child shows interest in.
Make it fun!

I'm homeschooled and I do comunity service a lot such as helping my grandpa mow, or something and I also volunteer at our local grocery store. But some schools require a certain amount of Community Service a year.

Our family has been homeschooling since our children were born. We have also done community service projects since they could understand about helping others. We have:
--put together backpacks for homeless children
--help with church services at a nursing home at least once a month
--go to play games and talk to residents at a nursing home occasionally
--put together Christmas Shoeboxes through Samaritan's purse
--donated money to Samaritan's purse for chickens and sheep for a 3rd world country
--helped to clean up trash at parks
--written letters to the editor about community service involvement
--participated in events that involve conservation of natural resources
--taken food to people who are bed-ridden from illness or sugery
--made Christmas ornaments through our 4-H group to decorate "Meals on Wheels" meals
--made make-up bags with small toiletries from hotels to give to women's shelters
--held a fundraiser right after Hurrican Katrina in order to help children--we donated the funds raised to the Red Cross organization
--gathered donated stuffed animals for our local children's receiving home
--Our project this summer is donating to clean out kennels and help to "socialize" animals at our local Humane Society.

These are the major projects we have done in our family and nearly every other homeschooling family I know does similar types of activities. Homeschoolers are often very community minded and civic minded--just not public school minded. And because we have the time and our community service is embedded into our "curriculum," we tend to be as much or more involved than public schooled kids. Our kids learn to truly care about our neighbors--not just the people who live next door.

Yes mostly in high schools and middle schools. It's usually less in homeschooling because there is nobody that hooks them in or unless there parents are organizing an event.
