I'm attending the University of Illinois next year, and I know for a fact that neither the government nor U of I will be giving me any need-based money to go to college. I was wondering if I still need to fill out the FAFSA in order to be considered for merit-based scholarships from the University. So what I'm asking is, is the FAFSA used solely for need-based aid, or is it required no matter which type of financial aid you would receive?

I am aware that I can apply for a Pell grant as we are very low income. My grades are not excellent, but all a, and B's but one F (science/biology). I do not want to have a student loan hanging over my head all my life. I am hoping to go into phychology, but I have no idea where I can go to get the best education for that, and where I can get a grant that will include my living expenses and on campus housing. is that even possible? Are there any scholarships that I can apply for now when I am a sophomore...I am just really nervous that things won't all come together in time...Any help you can offer will be really appreciated. PS. I am aware of the Upromise program, and fastweb. Thank you!

When I did the estimator, my EFC was =1. When I did the actual FAFSA, EFC=2300. My mom makes 24000, my dad is unemployed and we have 4 kids in the family. Does the 2300 EFC sound right?

If I have $40,000 of student loans that are currently deferred, is there a way I can get some of this forgiven? My degree is in Business Management and I work in the Human Resources field. I am would like to pay off as much as possible as I am a single mother preparing to send my own child off to college in a matter of a few years. I know that if someone is a school teacher or becomes a full-time school teacher, they can have some of that loan forgiven. I believe the same is also true for Doctor's but I wonder if there is anything for professionals who are not in the teaching field or medical field. Even if someone has had this same experience this would be great information. I know I am responsible for paying it off but I wanted to throw this out there in the atmosphere to see if there might be any loopholes of "forgiveness" for any other professionals. I've heard you can go overseas and do volunteer work but overseas is not an option for me at this point in the juncture. Thanks!!!!!!

I am attending a Bible College out of the country next year. Some american University's do give credit for the work I will be doing at the school but I am not sure how accredited it is. I won't be working while I am there so I am most deffinitely going to need aid of some sort. Also if anyone knows of any scholarships or grants that are available for this type of program, that would be terrific!

Can you consolidate student loans that were taken out for two different people? I would like to combine my loans with my husband's- is that possible?
Also, does anyone have suggestions on reputable agencies to consolidate your loans with? I have received mailings from Nelnet and Sallie Mae- does anyone know anything about either?
What is a good interest rate to accept for consolidation?

I'm just about to graduate from a private college and have a good amount of debt (private and federal). I have been looking into consolidating with Sallie Mae (most of my loans are through them) and it seems like a good deal. However, I also get consolidation mailings from companies like NelNet and Student Loan Xpress and was wondering if anyone has dealt with them before. SM and the other companies all compute your interest as a weighted average so they seem pretty similar. Specifically, StudentLoan Express (a CIT company) says I can get a rebate AND deductions off of my interest rate when I do an automatic payment. I'm just wondering if anyone has used these companies and/or places with rebates. I don't need too much detail with interest rates and such because I understand all of those things (finance major) but anything else would really help. Thanks!
