I am aware that I can apply for a Pell grant as we are very low income. My grades are not excellent, but all a, and B's but one F (science/biology). I do not want to have a student loan hanging over my head all my life. I am hoping to go into phychology, but I have no idea where I can go to get the best education for that, and where I can get a grant that will include my living expenses and on campus housing. is that even possible? Are there any scholarships that I can apply for now when I am a sophomore...I am just really nervous that things won't all come together in time...Any help you can offer will be really appreciated. PS. I am aware of the Upromise program, and fastweb. Thank you!

You can start applying for scholarships now. All the way up until Jan. of your Senior year (regular deadline for scholarships). Most scholarships are for Juniors and Seniors but you can definately start now.

You can also start preparing in other ways.
- Build relationships with teachers (so you will have good reccomendation letters)
- Make sure your grades get better, not worse
- Do some volunteer work (will make you eligible for more scholarships)
- Improve you writing skills and vocabulary

Two great websites to start with:
http://www.fastweb.com (U already know this one)
http://www.finaid.com/scholarships
And you can google scholarship + women, scholarship + tennis, scholarship + academic etc..

You will need to fill out FAFSA to apply for grants. Since you don't want loans you can always deny your loans but accept the grants. (FAFSA automatically applies for both).
All FAFSA money (grants and loans) includes living expenses as well as tuition and fees. The school will get the money, take out tution and fees, then give you the rest of the money. You can do whatever you want with that money (pay for rent, food, etc...).

I worked in a program that helped youth get into college. Please email me if you'd like more help:

Right now is the time to get started. Do not wait until you are a senior. In fact, thinking about your college future should have started some time ago, like, before you got the F in science/biology. It is not too late if your overall GPA is good and you have made up the F grade by taking some other science course......hope that helps.

Enjoy High School and don't worry too much about college until the end of your junior year. Just make sure you complete your FAFSA before the deadline when applying for federal aid. The sooner you get that in the more money (free) you will get.

START NOW!!!! There are tones of them. Apply to all that you can even if it's a small amount or you think a lot of people are going to apply to it.

Even when your in college look for them too.
