I'm attending the University of Illinois next year, and I know for a fact that neither the government nor U of I will be giving me any need-based money to go to college. I was wondering if I still need to fill out the FAFSA in order to be considered for merit-based scholarships from the University. So what I'm asking is, is the FAFSA used solely for need-based aid, or is it required no matter which type of financial aid you would receive?

FAFSA is primarily need based. But you may still qualify for some money. You don't know unless you try. And since it's free to fill out FAFSA and only takes a few minutes there is no reason not to.

Also, if your parents make a lot of money and they aren't helping you pay for college. Then you can get emancipated. If you do this FAFSA will see you as independent and you will be eligible for more money.

Some scholarships do require you to fill out FAFSA.

However, it is your choice.
To be sure you should call the 1-800# for University of Illinois and ask to speak to a financial aid counselor. They will help you out.

some scholarships may require you to fill out the FAFSA especially scholarships that are given based on need. but not all require this. check out websites of specific scholarships you are interested in or call them up or go to your high school college or CAP advisor and ask her for the requirements of applying for these scholarships.

Otherwise, you dont have to apply for FAFSA. FAFSA funds are given based on how much need they consider you have based on income. The more broke you are, the more money you get. if your parents have a house this can greatly reduce your funds. but dont let that stop you.

I was told that u should fill out a fasfa even if you won't (or dont think you will) qualify for aide. Because they use it for other things too. So maybe that is just my school... but I would say you should go ahead and fill it out. Or just call your schools financial aid office, they can tell you.

YES.
FAFSA is need-based aid.
If gov't won't give you $, then maybe colleges will. But only if need-based.

Or depending on which colleges, they'll be nice and give you aid (or invest in you) just for having good grades and such.
