Okay. As you can see we are doing expanded notation in Algebra right now. But he(my math teacher) doesn't want it done the easy way. He wants it done the hard way.

Here's an example on how he wants it done from our notes we took today.
example:
4, 070,000 = 4 x 10^6 + 0 x 10^5 + 7 x 10^4.

I don't know how to write 0.000409 in expanded notation. The way my teacher teaches is horrible. He spends most of the class time explaining the easy stuff. But spends only ten minutes on the hard stuff. So I'm confused as I ever will be.

Can anybody please check over my paragraph in response to this prompt for a scholarship application:
Please describe how and when any unusual family or persomal circumstances have affected your achievement in school, work experience, or your participation in school and community activites.

Like many others in our area, my home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. While I consider myself lucky in the long run, I was extremely worried and stressed out during the aftermath of the catastrophic storm. My family was forced to live with my widowed aunt and her two sons. While I know they are truly angels in disguise, at the time I found my cousins aggravating and bothersome. Their annoying ways would often times put me in the worst of moods, and that attitude would carry over to school. True, I would put on a happy façade, but on the inside I was so furious with everyone and everything. My grades started to drop because of this. However, I soon realized how fortunate my family was to have

Exams encourage a very unproductive way of learning. Unlike in school, university students have no time to study properly, and must resort to cramming to catch up with the exams. And in the end, they end up not remembering anything.

Instead of emphasizing on understanding the facts, they had to shove, shove and shove copy-pasted ultra-simplified notes up their brains in a day, hoping that it makes sense.

Actually of course it makes sense. Make sense enough to be able to do well in exams, whose questions are hardly anything above plain note-recalling challenges (eg. What is the antagonist of H2 receptors?). But does it make sense in REAL job situations?

Employers don't want to have employees with photographic memory - they have books and computers to do that for them. They want good problem solvers. People who KNOW ( as in understand) what they learned and are able to apply those knowledge in everyday situations.

It is ok... I am 84 out of 828 in my class. I know I have to work really hard to bring it up! This was as of first semester, and I am a freshman, so it will change alot. But if I was a senior, would I be able to get into a good college? (Only taking ranking into consideration... I know there is a lot more to it). Thanks!
