I'm at a loss to find a good word for this. The closest word I can find to what I am looking for is "intermediate," but that just doesnt sound or feel right to me.

There seems to be a rung missing in this word ladder at position number three. (Hopefully, what the activity or occupation is, has no influence on the context.)

5. retiree
4. professional
3. ?????? (possibly intermediate)
2. amateur (Some dictionaries classify this the same as novice, while others define it as a skilled person who does not do their craft or trade as a means of making a living, nor for financial gain.)
1. novice / apprentice / student

What word would best describe someone is neither an amateur nor a professional? Surely there must be an in-between word.
If "intermediate" is the only word that best describes this position, then I suppose I will have to utilize it, despite its awkwardness.

I need a one-word opposite, bald particular to head. Well-haired does not qualify, nor does hirsute, as hirsute is hairy in general, not particular to head.

I was watching the nine o' clock news and they did a report on the educational system in Texas. It is required that high school students in Texas have two to three years of mathematics and science. The school board wants to add another year or two of more challenging math and science courses to make students better prepared for math in college. I have to disagree. First, I realize you need to take college algebra as part of the core curriculum but math is not going to be everyone's focus. What if someone wants to major in history and become a public historian? The job requires research, written and oral skills not math. Communications requires you to be good with English not math. No one is going to need to know geometry for that. Second, if a college student majors in Chemistry then t math is fine. Third, most students have a hard time grasping math. I suck at math and was always better at language arts. I think the students need to make the decision not the school board.

First off, Im straight, and, I support being gay/lesbian.

But every once in a while, the conversation of gay marriage will come up, and she'll ask me how I feel about it, and I dont know what to say, so I just respond "people should just do what they want" (which isnt really an answer, because im undecided about the issue)

I dont know what to say next time its brought up. I care about my friend and all, but I dont wanna hurt her feelings, or have her think im a conservative (cuz im not) Help!
