I'm thinking specifically of a craft in the news today, lifted by helium balloons. A very simple "micro-plan" (with fan propulsion) can be made using helium balloons to attain lift, and I believe I'd like to do that. If state matters, I'm in Pennsylvania.

Is it any good? Is it a gimmick, all this composites stuff, anyway I think the bigger pax windows will be a real hit.

Either from the crew, on the radio, pilot to co-pilot, flight engineer. etc. I have seen some very experienced pilots on this site, you all must have heard some comments/statements, directions, that would make milk spew out of your nostrils! Best answer gets two FREE economy tickets on any airline that does NOT seat two 5' 9" 350lb passengers in both the aile and window seats,of the same row, then tries to fit you in between them on a NYC to LAX direct, non-stop flight!

I work at a car company that sits right at the end of a big airport runway. So we get all the landing aircraft most of the time, and I have noticed that alot of these large (737, 757, 767,727, etc) are dumping fuel as they are landing. We are the last thing they fly over, and I see liquid/vapor comming from the tips of their wings. I've noticed SouthWest Airlines as the major culprit here...but I want to know why are they doing this, and what can i do about this? I think it is hazardous to work under planes dumping fuel on you. Any advise?

In the Boeing versus Airbus thread of last night, a poster claimed that Carbon didn't melt and was more fire resistant than ally yum yum.
Please show proof of this.
The poster also listed a plethora of Aircraft "Made of Carbon". The truth of that is that the panels, covers, Fin/rudder etc. were carbon. The A400 is the 1st aircraft to have a fully carbon wing spar and it's not in the sky yet.
The fighters and B-2 are so compact in design that the carbon spars are short and stiff. And, the pilot can always pull the "mummy" handle if he gets a fire.
The 787 has a fabricated carbon spar method, but it will still melt to black powder at about 575 deg F.
The fact is, no airline manufacturer has had the nerve to try a full carbon A/c primary structure until now, and I do not believe the industry is ready for it. I am involved in making such A/c structures.

I know one had a bigger opening in front of the engine, but which one was it? Which version was more powerful?

The planes were light colored and at least the size of a commercial jet. They were traveling west and much closer together than regular air traffic.

I just am curious as to what they were and why the formation. :)

see this following paragraph.

Suddenly te plane flicked on its back. Then it was swerving wildly between the river banks, just ten feet above the water, and completely upside down. He caught and held her there, and then it was coming at me and the bridge, an impossible sight with its damn great floats sticking up at the sky.

He could't try and roll right-side-up without sticking in a wing, so he did the only thing he could: push on full power and tried to fly her out upside down, over the bridge. And he almost did it.

I just can not set up the whole situation. how does the plane change its directions from the beginning? especially flick thing.

The propeller touched and the smooth water exploded into spray. The tail whiped over and the whole plane jumped clear of the water.

When a big plane (like a 747) lands, does it bounce on the runway ?

Does it actually touches the ground, get back in the air and touches the ground again for good ?
Or is there only one contact with the ground with a bounce feeling due to the suspension ?

I don't like Airbus as much because of the sidesticks. The pilot's sidestick is on the left side, and most people are righties. Boeing's yoke gives more control. Airbus still has wicked planes, though.

I live in Pensacola Florida and am interested in buying a small ultralight ailplane to fly around the beaches. How difficult is it to get a permit to fly one of these? I've heard that you don't even need a license to fly an ultralight but that doesn't make sense to me...Thanks for your help!

Surely we'd be a lot better off with a parachute instead of a seatbelt and a lifejacket ( although these are necessary too ). Under circumstances where something went wrong wouldn't it save lives? Maybe airline bosses think that people wouldn't feel as safe and fly less if parachutes were made available.
If your plane is going down no seatbelt or lifejacket with a whistle is worth jackshit to you.

I was told to get on a jumbo jet because I would not be able to feel the plane moving. What is your opinion. I am thinking about flying to Washington state and then to Alaska for a cruise.

By this I mean for a military pilot, entering the cockpit, say, moving from an F-4 to an F-15, or from an F-15 to F-16, is it Avionics?, or the other possible "snakes" that can bite you, and adjusting to what they are from type to type? I would ask of commerical pilots the same, a 737 to a 767, 777 or to an A330, what is the most difficult issue when you look at the "new" office? is there a mental checklist you go through, or is it just experience?
