Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger traveling on an airplane. Experience shows otherwise, considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year. Media coverage would suggest that airline crashes happen every day. Studies have shown one would have to fly once a day every day for over 15,000 years in order to statistically be involved in an aircraft accident"
Flying is very very safe. Don’t worry about terrorists that is the least likely thing to go wrong on a commercial flight in the US these days. Flying in the United States is very safe, there has not been a major airline crash in the US since November of 2001! That is a long time for no major crashes and only on fatality in the last seven years for the Major Airlines in the US.
Even when there is a problem on an airplane, if an engine fails on takeoff or an engine fire etc.. 99% of the time the plane lands safely. Planes these days are amazing piece of technology and the pilots are trained better than ever. If you not afraid to drive in a car you should not be afraid to fly in a plane.
Just sit back relax and try to enjoy the flight. Its one of the safest things you can do much safer than driving a car, walking down the street, or even sleeping in your house. More people have died on North American highways in the year 2006 than the amount of people who have died in powered flight aviation whole 104 year history!
Also the best way to completely get over your fears is go to you local General aviation airport and take flying lessons! Once you fly in a small airplane a few times and learn that airplanes fly and that’s all they do you will be much more confident with flying on commercial planes. You will learn a lot with a few flying lessons. I could even teach you a lot by just showing you my Microsoft Flight Simulator. Flying is a great experience, once you get used to it and learn what makes airplanes fly etc.. your fears go away trust me, I used to be a little bit scared to fly too. Now I LOVE it.

I am a pilot and the only time I am afraid of flying in a plane is if it is a single engine plane and the flight is over water beyond gliding distance from land. Now that is scarry

but apart from that there is nothing to be afraid of. The stats say that you are more likely to die in a car crash than in a plane. So think about that next time you are driving out to the airport!

Well, kind of, even though I'm an aviation fanatic.

The reason being is that for a couple of flights to and from Japan I got some really bad gas, I'm guessing from the pressurization cycles. Sometimes it hurt so badly I couldn't move.

Aside from that, I'm not afraid. It's not bad flying after dark either, just because looking out of the window it looks kinda cool.

i am 20 and have flown 6 times or more. i am afraid of heights yet i always like to sit next to the window. you watch all these movies with plane crashes and terrorist attacks yet still flying is the safest form of transportation so to speak. flying after dark is the best especially if you fly over places like NYC and las vegas. very nice view of lights and scenery.

The reason people are afraid to fly is cuz if the plane goes down you are all going to bite it. and there is nothing you can do. as you are not in control.
However it is statistically the safest way to travel. did you know that you can take offf , fly and land now all by computer . they only need pilots to add a human touch if required in case .

nope i am not afraid. the reason is that airline crashes are few and far between. as long as coverage of an airline crash remains front page news, and breaking news on tv things are fine.

but when airline crash details are relegated to the back of first section of the paper, where the editorials are, and the mid day news starts off telling you the news they are going to cover, and then toss in "by the way a 747 crashed into a skyscraper this morning, 578 people are known dead, and 2300 injured. we will have more on this on our 10pm broadcast, lew how did the cardinals do today?" THEN i will start to worry.

I worry about mechanical failure; it's not like you could pull over to the side of the road if somethingwent wrong. But I always remind myself that statistically, it's safer than traveling the same distance on the highway.

Personally, I like looking out the window and seeing the shape of the land. It's neat seeing what it looks like from the air. Sunrises and sunsets are pretty out airlplane windows too.

I used to be because I had this thing about heights, then I kept hearing about these planes blowing up. Now, Im not afraid of much of anything. I figured when its my time to go, its my time, no matter if Im in the air or on the ground.
