probably just a software upgrade, though it might require some equipment changes as well. everything is there though to allow for the use of missles, cannon, and bombs.

The A-4 could never be a true multirole fighter because it was designed as a subsonic ground attack aircraft 50 years ago.
It could never take on modern fighters one to one (except if Viper is flying), has no stealth capability, and in ground attack it is obsolete as well.
It has good maneuverability and payload and could have its electronics upgraded, but the same small, slow plane is still going to be underneath.

Probably just air-to-air radar. It's only AA capability is sidewinders and cannon. Several foreign nations use it as a multirole fighter, but it's not like they're trying to fight off SU-27s.

Mainly in the electronic weapons systems, and engine. It is designed primarily for low level ground support missions. It would have to have a more powerful engine to give it the speed needed for arial combat against fighter jets. And weapons systems will have to be changed along with fire contol systems ( air to air missile fire control systems) will have to be upgraded to compete with modern fighters in dog fights. Back when it first went into service it could hold it's own against most Soviet fighters but not now with the modern weapons systems.
You have to keep in mind the A-k has been in service since the late 50's early 60's. It's weapon systems are dated.
Still even today it is one heck of a ground support aircraft. Small hard to see, hard for AAA to range in on, hard to get missile lock on when at at low level. Still hold it's own if it can keep the enemy aircraft at around 2,000 and lower above hard deck so they have to use their guns not missiles.
It did one whale of a job in Vietnam with Marine Pilots.

Well, would need a system(electronics) to be able to handle the differences of the kind of ordinance(weapons) in question. Then if you want guns, will have to mod the plane to have them installed, and tested. Let alone the age of this kind of aircraft, trying to find parts to keep it flyable, and handle the weights and stresses on the wings, and engine performances. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

1. a radar to guide air to air missles (it may be capable of using the sidewinder)
2. a bigger nose to house the radar
3. a bigger engine to push it through the air
4. more fuel for the bigger engine
5. a bigger wing for the increased weight
and so on.
