There are several sites on the web that can help you. You are not alone, lots of people have a fear of flying. You have to give your logical side strength over the emotional side. Flying is much safer than getting in your car. Daily drivers face a 1 in 3000 chance of DYING every year in their car! Auto accidents account for 94% of all transportation deaths.

While there are risks in using all forms of transportation, commercial airline travel is one of the safest. From January 1982 to March 2001, a period of 19.25 years, there were a total of 8,109,000,000 passenger enplanements. During that same time period, there were 2,301 fatalities (120 people killed on average each year), and 348 serious injuries. This amounts to a 0.00003% chance of being seriously injured or killed in a commercial aviation accident. This is far less than any other mode of transportation. [Source: NTSB, Passenger Fatalities, 1982 through March 2001.] Compare this to the average of 41,000 deaths per year alone and only accounting for the USA.

That's exactly how I felt when I first started flying when I was little. It is very UNlikely for a commercial jet to crash or any plane. Say that all of the engines quit, the plane has a glide path. I fly alot so I can't be scared at all, otherwise I wouldn't have been some of the beautiful places that I have been.

An airplane is designed to stay in the air. There are air traffic controllers all over the world making sure that planes don't get too close to each other. There are hundreds of steps that the pilot and co-pilot go through each time they take off and land. And there are tons of maintenance/inspections done on the plane when it's on the ground.

BTS, a part of DOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), reported that the airlines carried 660 million domestic passengers during 2005, up from the 635 million carried in 2004.

...and in the 3 years prior to March 2007, the current rate is 0.023 fatal accidents per 100,000 departures...and they're trying to reduce that to .010

That's a LOT of years between flights with fatal accidents!!! You're more likely to get hurt in a car accident.

Statistics PROVE, that you are more likely to die by being hit by lightning, than by in a plane crash, planes atually are one of the safest ways to travel, about 3,000planes enter and depart many of the main airports everyday! Im takin a plane to NYC, nxt month, and I know that I'll be ok:) My best advice is....don't think about the bad stuff, bring your ipod, or a blanket, and just relax, and request a seat away from the windows, that way you won't be able to see outside the plane. I dont remember when the last commercial plane crash happened. The FAA, and airport security is getting better at protectin planes! So relax. and have a nice trip:)

I don't know the exact numbers, but statistically it's much safer to fly in a plane than ride in a car. I always remind myself of that when I start to get worried.

My dad used to pilot planes. I fly 5-6 times a year on commercial planes, and he is always very interested in finding out which one. There is only ONE that he has ever made me get a new ticket for--it was a Beech plane. Apparently, Beech misprinted one of their maintenance manuals a while ago, so their planes go down much more than most. So, umm, stay away from Beech and you should be ok!

There are literally tens of thousands of flights a day, and of the 5 or so a year that have problems 4.9999 land safely. Aircraft are built with double and even triple redundant systems and flown by highly experienced pilots. I don't think there's been a crash of a US jet this year. I've been on literally thousands of flights and only once did we have a slight problem...one engine failed. We just flew on the other 3. Even 2 engine craft can fly on one engine if they have to. Take something to relax and enjoy the ride.
PS-the wings are supposed to move up and down slightly...that's so they don't snap off.

as long as airline crashes are front page news, and the breaking story on tv news, there is nothing to worry about. it is when an airliner can crash, and the details in the paper show up in the editorial section, or the noonday news starts their program with and these are the days headlines, and a story we are following, a 747 slammed into dowtown los angeles early this morning, 746 people known dead, 2800 injured. we will have more on this on our 10pm broadcast, jim how are the dodgers doing today? THAT is the time to worry.

First of all, the national weather service is on your side. If there is anything at all, I mean anything that might cause a problem for the plane, it won't leave the gate.

People are inherently nice. The last flight I was on had a bit of turbulence, mind you everything worked out fine, but there was a lady a few rows in front of me freaking out. She grabbed the gentleman's sleeve, who was sitting next to her. You might never get used to it, but if you need help, it will be there when you need it.
