I live in Pensacola Florida and am interested in buying a small ultralight ailplane to fly around the beaches. How difficult is it to get a permit to fly one of these? I've heard that you don't even need a license to fly an ultralight but that doesn't make sense to me...Thanks for your help!

If it is a true ultralight, it is not classed as an airplane, but an ultralight vehicle.. No license is required, but some local authorities may restrict areas of operation. Read FAR Part 103 for the regulations:

senseless or not, you don't need a license to fly an ultralight. i guess they figure anyone who would fly a plane under 500 pounds has a death wish anyway and a plane that small couldn't do a whole lot of damage. happy flying!

No certificate required....
I'm a pilot, and I'd never fly in an ultralight.
Way too much of a chance of something happening..
