My wife and I (filing jointly) have a home mortgage with about a $140,000 balance. Since my father died in October, we’ve been covering the mortgage payments on his home, which we are trying to sell, though the market is soft now. Dad's home mortgage is about $185,000, and the interest portion of the monthly payment is about $1,000 compared to $800 for our home mortgage. The liquid portion of Dad’s inheritance is enough to pay off one, but not both, of the mortgages. Which should we pay off first?

I recently discovered that I have been overpaying my health benefits by double for 2 years now? The company I work for is going to be giving me a refund but said they are going to take taxes out of it. My feeling is, if anything they need to pay ME for all the taxes I have paid on it in the first place. They screwed up and are now going to try and double tax me on money I should have never paid in the first place. Is it legal for them to tax me on the refund and should they have to refund the money I have already paid in taxes? Thanks for any help!!

If I am having problems working with my IRS auditor would I be better off pushing the file to appeals court? Does it look bad for an auditor not to close out the file. Just looking for some helpful hints to use to get the auditor to work with me.

If I didn't work at all in 2007 will I end up paying the IRS, instead of receiving money back? I worked from 05-06 but I decided to become a full time student in 07 and hadn't worked at all this year. Will I owe money?

My husband can claim his daughter on even numbered years as outlined in the custody paperwork. During the custody dispute, he was not paying childsupport and once child support was set an additional $20 a month was tacked on in order to go towards the rearages (about $1500 in rearages) so instead of paying $519 a month, he pays $539. His income tax returns also go directly towards the rearages. It was last at around $1100 but with his income tax refund this year, it went down to around $700. In 08 if he claims his daughter and is scheduled for a refund, it again will go towards the rearages first. However, I'm curious if I can claim my stepdaughter instead of him that way we actually receive the money? If not that's fine too ... at least we'll have all the rearages paid off with the next refund. JUST CURIOUS!

I moved to OH "this year" from GA. I opened my mail today and the OH tax man says I have not paid OH for 2006. I don't want to provide my previous tax return from GA, because the letter made me mad. And why should I give them my personal info? What do you think I should do?

in Miami-Dade county! Is there something similar in your city or county?

My mortgage company sent out 2 checks totaling $1700.00 for property taxes. (One to the a county I live in; one to another county where I don't even live).
I am tax exempt for this year.
My escrow account has a negative amount because of this double-disbursement.
I called and got basically yelled at, I asked for a supervisor (they said he could not be reached, I'd have to send something in writing to "speak" with him), My escrow account is negative $800+ dollars (and it's their fault!) and they want to treat me with such horrible service...
I'm afraid my monthly payment will be going up because I have a negative amount in escrow. The mortgage company shouldn't have sent ANY check at all!

They told me a week ago that it would be taken care of by last Friday, now they're telling me it'll be after the first of the year.
Can anyone give me some advice???

I am trying to decide whether I should sign up for the Child Care flexible spending account offered in my company.
My 3 years old son is going to PRE-K3 and we pay around $600 every month. Can I add the tuition to my itemized deduction when I fill fax in the next couple months?
My employer offers Child Care Flexible Spending Account which set aside $5000 from my paycheck, pre-tax, to pay for the tuition.

Do I save more money if I sign up for the Flexible Spending Account? or it is the same as I add the tuition to to itemized deduction

Thanks!
