Hello, Right now I am not married. I have a fiance and will be a new mommy in May. If we get married oct 2008, i have questions about my taxes. First, is there a tax refund for being married? he said something about getting an extra 1,500 dollars back for being married. What about our child? do we get extra money for that? My soon to be husband makes 35,000 a year. Right now I made zero. When we are married I will probably be working but would not be making more than 30,000 a year probably. Please let me know what is up with tax refunds when you have a child and are married. If i don't work can he claim me as a dependent and get money back for that?

What is the cut off day for being able to claim your child? I am expecting and I think I heard somewhere that in order to claim your child, they would have to be born before dec.27th. Is this true? Or would the cut off day be dec.31st?

Say if I have a ST loss carryover of $10,000 and a ST gain of just 8,000 this year but a LT gain of 12,000 this year. Can I choose to just offset the 8,000 ST gain and pay taxes for the 12,000 LT gain this year, and carry the remaining 2,000 of ST loss over to next year?

I have about $10,000 loss carried over and ST gain of $8000 and LT gain of $12,000. Which part of the gain will be offset? Can I choose to offset all ST gain ($8000) first and then $2000 of the LT gain, leaving $10,000 of LT gain as net?

Just out of curiousity, if you have your own business -- can your business pay for your child's daycare? --- if so, can you itemize those expenses on your taxes for your business? -- and if you can do that, on your personal tax return, can you take advantage of the child tax credits of $3000 per kid?

I recently moved into my own apartment in Feb, 07. okay i started a new job as well. And when i filled that my w-2 i think that is what it is. i claimed my self. so i could have a lil extra money to get on my feet. about 3 months later i changed it back to single and 0. so where they took a little more out of my check every payday. okay so my question is when tax refund time rolls around in 08 will i have to pay in or will i get money back? remember that i was only claiming my self for about 3 months. which is 6 paychecks because i get paid 2 times a month. the rest of the time i was single and 0.
I also had another job at this time working where on my w-2 with that company i was living with my parents. so on one job's w-2 iwas single and 0 and on another my parents where claiming me. will that cause a problem? i am very confused and really worried. can someone shed some light please?

I am purchasing a home and have recieved a large $ gift for my down payment. Does anyone know how this will effect my taxes this year? I have a gift receipt. Does the donor pay the taxes or do I? If I pay them, how do they factor that into my taxes?

It's the first time I'll be doing my taxes, but it's a little more confusing than that. I'm currently not speaking with my father, who claimed me last year even though I was living on my own. Financially he has me on his health insurance, but that's the only dependency I have on him. I've moved in with my mother, who hasn't been in my life since I was younger and now she is taking care of some of my financial needs.

My question is.. is it better for me to file as independent, or dependent?

I have a Roth IRA that I've already established and will be contributing the max amount allowed. I would like for my wife to do the same. However, earlier in the year she made contributions to a tradtional IRA (through an automated account she had already established, but has since been stopped). Let's say she contributed $500. Do I have to "convert" that into a Roth and pay taxes on it, or can I simply contribute $3500 into a Roth and leave the $500 in the regular IRA?

Tax Question! This year I worked as a preschool teacher for a few months. While filling out my W4s I was unsure of whether I am "exempt" or not. Last year I was a waitress and made around 12,000 for the year.
I am single, and I have no children.
I do own a house with my boyfriend, but last year he filed the house under just him because he has a higher income and we are not married.

My question is: Number 7 on my W4 says "I claime exemption from withholding for 2007, and I certify that I meet both of the following conditions for exemption.. If you meet both exemptions write "exempt" here"

Am i exempt? I don't even know what that means? lol.

I called Jackson Hewitt who told me that there is no need to file taxes for my deceased father if the only income he received for the year was his Social Security. My husband reminded me last night that early in the year my father had withdrawn $10,000 from an investment account and that would be considered taxable income. But isn't the rule that if your income is less than 12k a year you don't file taxes? Sooooo.... Am I suppose to file a return for him or not?

I have called the IRS and the Dept of Revenue for the state. Neither of them know what I am talkng about. I also called the business license department and they dont know either.

I thought that you needed a retail license or a exemption certificate to resell wholesale goods. I have searched online and cannot find this form for Alaska. It is on the internet for other states that don't sell wholesale....such as SD.

This will be my first year filing as an independent. I'm sure my parents will help me get through it somewhat. Are there any websites out there that list forms I should be gathering and deductions I could be making?

Just some background. I graduated college in May and I've been taking one class towards my masters online in both the summer and fall. Can I deduct any of my college expenses from this year? If so how much? Since my grad school is online could a percentage of my Comcast bill be deducted?

Just trying to figure all of this out for the first time

Thanks in advance
