is it true that if u earn under a certain amount yearly based on self employment that u dont have to pay taxes or are limited to the amount that u have to pay....and is there any way that i can find out if i actually owe the state taxes (preferably online and free without having to use a credit card)...just to avoid any possible audits. thank u for all replies and answers

I would go onto irs.gov you can find that information there, or you may even call them, believe or not they are there to help you or call your local CPA office.

You can call the IRS toll free number, 800-826-1040 and ask. State tax agencies have the same service.

Yes you are also responsible. By filing joint he has a larger tax refund and his debt will be paid off faster. If he files separately he would be disqualified for many deductions (if he had them originally) and it is the highest tax rate. Is this debt prior to marriage or after marriage? Are you in a community property state?

With the IRS, if you are self-employed, the most that you can make in any given year without paying taxes is $399.

If you made more than that, you should have filed and paid.

Each state has different rules and you did not say what state you are in. Either way, there is no way to look up balance dues on the web.
