You should get back anything that was withheld for federal income tax, and if the child you are claiming is your child who lives with you, you should also get an Earned Income Credit. I am assuming that you are not married - if you are, then the above would not necessarily apply.

you mean on your w-4, you only claim one exemption? you should get a refund then.
