We require w-9's since we don't withhold taxes; however this independent contractor has not given us an identification # that we can submit to the IRS, and I'm not too sure what to do about his earnings. Should I withhold them until he provides a valid #? or is there another form I need to fill out for him since he is a foreigner?

I would understand if the government taxed cigarettes if they provided free healthcare because of the conflict of interest. But what is their reasoning behind the current sin tax? The the government just wants to profit off of peoples addictions? Plus how can the federal government require tobacco companies to discourage youth smoking all the while the tax on cigarettes helps pay for public education?

Ed & Elaine Brown have stated they will pay a tax on their income if the I.R.S. would show them the law requiring Americans to pay a tax on their labor (income).

Why would the I.R.S. rather murder Ed & Elaine Brown then simply show them the law so the Brown's can pay the money the I.R.S. claims they are owed ??

My mom has had a difficult time with her joints. She had a hip replaced and it didn't heal. She had to have both hips taken out due to infection. She is now scheduled to have the prosthetic hips put in. Because of all she has been through, she has lots of joint pain. My husband and I paid for a jetted tub to be put in her house to help her. Can I take out any kind of tax deductions for this gift? It was about $7,000.00. Any help would be great! Thanks.

My father wants to claim me on his taxes as a dependent and meets all criteria besides possibly the Residence test. He is telling me that because I am a student I am "temporarily absent" from his residence, despite the fact that I have been moved out for 4 years now and I am never moving back.

Is he right?
