we even have the 5 cent tax on cans of tomatoes, soups, etc. , we can't recycle those cans and cant even return them to get that 5 cents back.
WORSE , Of course there is a 4% tax on the 5cent, were getting ripped off.
What about your state ?

of course i'm use to paying extra tax of returnable bottles and cans but this new tax on non returnable items is new in my state and upsets me.

I live in Hawaii and my Mom told me last week that a new five cents was added onto non refundable cans and maybe that's what your writing about.
I imagine most citizens haven't noticed, I didn't but now I'll pay attention & buy boxed liquids as an alternative and save mega bucks

No, in PA there's not a tax on cans. There is mandatory recycling though. It started in effect with the largest communities, and is working its way down to the smallest. At this point, only the smallest still don't have mandatory recycling. Each community can chose (from a list) which items it's going to recycle - does not have to recycle eveything that's recyclable.

California has a 5 cent (I think) charge on cans and bottle (might be higher for bigger bottles). I know of no one that takes them back to the store to get their money back. On the other hand most do get recycled since most cities will collect them just like they collect garbage. California (or at least in my area) is 8.25% tax.

Note in cans/bottles I mean like soda and such not on tomatoes and that kind of thing.

Think of it this way...lets say your state generates 5 million for that tax. Even if the eliminate it they will find something else to tax you on to get their 5 million back. No matter what your going to get screwed, in only a question if you want to know hwere or not.
In ohio we pay nothing like that. Our sales tax is 7.25% on all purchases if that helps.

I live in Montana. They tax other things. There are so few people, it doesn't pay many places to recycle cans. The state gets its revenue other ways here.

Sounds like you are getting jipped. In BC Canada we are charged PST and GST. 6% and 7% respectively.
