If a person gets a tax refund, is there a rule of thumb for increasing your exemptions on your W-4 in order to get more money back during the year? At one time, I heard that for every $600 you get back on your federal return, you can increase your exemptions by 1. This assumes that your financial situation is similar to last year.

I received several different answers. There must be a right or wrong. I am a 40 year old single woman who has work 2-3 jobs most of my life. I came from NE to CA. I felt like I was missing a personal life and had enough stock options to take some time off. Got to know my neices and nephews and help my parents out and do some charity work. I also had a boss who wasn't allowed to talk to me due to a personal relationship with my colleague. My Dad has since passed away and I was able to spend 5 months helping my Mom and deal with the paperwork and clutter. I am now looking for a job. I have never taken unemployment or welfare and money doesn't always make happiness. Please reply. Thanks! Most people are envious, but when they were having fun as teen, twenties and thirties, I was busting my butt to prove to an Italian family that I could support myself, and NO I am not a womans libber. And yes, I payed 90,000 to the government last year. A killer!!

What I want to know is does their taxes that they owe become my taxes that I will owe?

Here is my situation: I am both a citizen and resident in the US and Italy. I spend more time in Europe than in the US. I left the US Navy a couple of years ago and started working in offshore engineering as an ROV pilot. My big question is, since I make all my income outside the US from different sources, how much should I expect to be paying if I paid my taxes in the US? I know that some countries such as the UK have a tax law for those workers who are not physically present in the UK. As long as they declare it, they pretty much can claim it all back. In Italy, I believe that I would be required to pay 40 some odd percent tax and too me that is just ridiculous so if I can stay legal and pay less to no tax.....all legitimate suggestions are appreciated.

So I am trying to figure out this whole "deductions" thing. Does it mean for instance I pay roughly $3,700 a year in taxes. This year i have donated about $2,000 worth of stuff to goodwill due to a move. I have over 10,000 in medical bill payments. And a few other things that determined a deduction I moved 3000 miles to take a new job. So if I paid $3700 in taxes and have $12,000 in deductions does that mean I am guaranteed by the IRS to get all of my $3700 back that I have paid them? I went to a tax services website H & R block and typed in some hypothetical numbers and when I choose to itemize to show my deductions my return was almost $1000 less than if I used the Standard Deduction why is that?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
