Also, I heard some people dont even get tax returns, they have to pay more at the en of the year? Im confused.

You would file a 540EZ.

And you heard right, CA has started something new the last couple of years. They pick out a bunch of people who filed the 540EZ the prior year and CA actually prepares their return for them beforehand. They estimate that you would pretty much have roughly the same income and tax as last year, they send you the filled out form, and if you like what they did, you check the box, sign the return, and send it back to CA. If you don't agree with their amounts, then you prepare your own.

The tax brackets are doubled for married filing jointly vs. married filing separately. You get married so you can produce some beautiful 'deductions'.
