I'd like to hear economists' opinions, not political ones. It seems to me that by taxing income, we are discouraging something that is desirable to society- people working. What if we replaced income tax with a "consumption tax"- charging people for the resources they consume rather than their work? This would encourage resource conservation while at the same time eliminate a negative incentive on working. I think this would lead to increased productivity and job growth in the US. What are your thoughts?

Taxes are a big issue for retired people on fixed incomes. With rising medical costs, too, and utility bills, I am afraid for the future of older Americans.

To properly structure a loan between family members so as to avoid tax consequences to the person being lent the money, does the person lending the money need to charge the prevailing rate of interest. If so, is the rate prime plus one, or some other amount. Are there any other potential requirements that I should look into?

Congress revived the deduction for college cost this week, but the tax return forms have already been printed without it. Does this mean the deduction is not possible with a paper return? Will the online return be updated that quickly?

Someone else asked this, and just like the intent of his question, only recieved bigoted, uneducated answers.

We do pay tax on things we buy. We should have to pay income tax because it's unconstitutional. Which means noone should pay it. Anyone of any nationality who sells handmade crafts from their vehicle doesn't pay taxes unless they are dumb enough to claim their income. And if we do settle, we do pay property tax. So you tell me, is it really so unfair that we don't pay income tax, when it's as simple as you finding a lawyer to contest the IRS, who in every single suit filed against them in the matter has settled out of court cos they know taking tax from your income is not legal?

And we are called Roma, not Gypsies. The word people so ignorantly refer to us as is a slur on par with the "N" word.
