Taxes are a big issue for retired people on fixed incomes. With rising medical costs, too, and utility bills, I am afraid for the future of older Americans.

As a disabled person who cannot afford to retire, I can say, your paranoia is misplaced.

It has been Republicans who have reduced the benefits from disability. And transfered social security taxes to the middle classes, and raised the retirement age.

It is the Republicans who wrote and passed the bill that allowed corporations to dump their retirement benefits.

It is the Republicans who passed a Medicare drug bill that only helped the Drug, and Insurance companies, will ultimately raise drug costs, and dump into the garbage anyone who cannot afford to get across the "donut hole".

It is the Republicans that have created policies that have brought record utility prices, with profits that went to CEO's rather than stock holders.

Unless you are in Paris Hilton's tax bracket, all of your expenses are going up, and the Republicans are doing everything they can to make it worse. The only taxes Democrats want to raise would not affect any one struggling to make ends meet.

The unfunded Trillions in graft and corruption, however is creating a tax on everyone as the dollar loses value and your fixed income becomes fixed a bit lower.

Democrats will be lucky to succeed in preserving freedom and democracy, but a return to a tax structure that allows a middle class to even exist, a medical system that sees the health of everyone as a human right, and corporation oversight that keeps a few powerful leaders from robbing and/or exploiting everyone from investors, to customers, to employees, is what many Democrats would do if they can, and what the Republicans will use every lie, con, and trick in the book to prevent.

Most of the politicians (on both sides) want to reduce gov't spending. If tax law is changed, I think it will be minimal, and probably only effect the people that earn over $35,000 per year.

So you probably won't be affected.

Spending has been high because of the war and homeland security. And it has worked with no terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11. But it appears the congress and Bush are moving in a direction to fix the high spending over the next year or two. Hopefully the find a safe balance between security and spending.

The issue now is to handle government spending responsibly. You know you can't spend more when your income is reduced. So why did our government drastically increase spending and cut taxes? Where does the extra money come from? There will have to be some changes, the trick is to try to do it without hurting the people.

No, I am a Republican and the Dems will not raise the taxes of the poor or handicapped. They possibly could ruin the country though by devestating the infrastructure of the economy though.

They might try, but Republicans still have veto power! Dems dont have enough majority right now to over-ride a veto!
