I'm attempting to do my mother-in-law's taxes...she was born in Mexico and got married there to another Mexican about 30 years ago...when filing for taxes here does she have to file as married? They never married here or anything. I was just running the numbers and she would get more if filing as single but I don't know if that's allowed...

How does that work out?

I recently was awarded a legal settlement of $55,000. The party paying the money is planning to pay it out on a 1099, labeled as "emotional distress" damages. I don't know much about this, except that it will ultimately reduce the amount of taxes that are taken out. The problem is that because they are handing me a lump sum check with the 1099, they are not taking the taxes out in advance. Does anyone know how much of this I should set aside for my taxes next year?

Our divorce decree states that we are to alternate years claiming our daughter. This year was supposed to be our year, but I e-filed my taxes and it was rejected because it said that she was already claimed by another person. He still has not returned my calls regarding this, but I can't imagine who else would have claimed her. Anyway, who do I need to do in order to claim her since, according to the divorce decree, it is our year?

When I filled out my w-4's this last year for my job I put exempt at the bottom of the page and they didn't take out any federal or state withholding's. I was told exempt meant that nobody could take your taxes when you filed so I put exempt cause nobody is trying to take them so I didn't pay attention when I got my check and I just looked at my hours and I saw they took out money cause the gross was different from the amount of the check but I didn't notice at all. Will I get in trouble for this? I put exempt on my husbands also and his boss took out federal and state so I guess that is why I got confused. Anyone know how to go about this? My husband has to pay taxes cause he makes more but I hardly worked so I wouldn't have to pay. Am I in serious trouble? When I said try to take my taxes I meant like if collection's agency or other places want them cause you don't pay your bills. I do pay my bills!

Two in one question. I am a real estate broker and I manage properties. In the process I have to do repairs on certain properties and have purchased hand tools for this purchase. I don't want to have to capitalize and all that for a 3.99 screwdriver so how do I deduct these purchases.

Part two. If I throw a client party at my house, can I write off the entire amount or is it subject to the 50% entertainment stuff.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

My new job offer requires me to be in the field about 50% of the time, using my own vehicle. Is .34 per mile a fair offer? Will I be able to deduct the difference between the .34 and what is the standard mileage deduction allowed by the IRS?

My husband has business losses that will offset his income of 85K and Im wondering if I claim the child...will I get a bigger benefit then he does. I read everywhere the the benefit for filing married is much more beneficial than married/separate. Although doesn't the fact that he lost so much on his business make him at a loss no matter how many more deductions he would take by WIFE and CHILD credit..I mean I think I would gain by FILING SEPARATE.....LOW INCOME of 6K and ONE CHILD as a dependent....Am I correct on this ASSUMPTION?

Thanks,

I spent $800 moving slightly closer to work. I know I dont get the moving closer to work deduction. I only have about 1200 bucks in itemized deductions for 2006. I think I will end up using the standard deduction. Is there a way for me to deduct this 800 bucks + 200 in charity on top of my standard deduction? I am single, no kids, live in an apartment and live in Boston.
