The main cause for the loss of money in investments is because investors exit their positions when their positions are at a loss. If they had just held on to their positions until the stock prices turn around, then they would never have any realized losses, unless the company goes bankrupt. Let's say you are playing with infinite capital. You can invest in any of the stocks in the market and hold them for as long as you want to. What's the chance of you losing money?

I use TD Ameritrade and I currently have a short position of a particular stock. I tried to short more yesterday and was told by TDAM that there were no shares available to short.

I'm wondering if this is a problem just with TD Ameritrade and their access to shares/liquidty or if this is somethign that I would have encountered across the industry in general yesterday.

I ask because if this is just a problem for TDAM and I could have better access to this type of transaction through a different broker then I will definitley explore changing brokers. I have been happy with TDAM up to this point though so if this was just a problem yesterday in the market in general then I would stick with TDAM.
I just don't know the mechanics of how TD handles shorting, is it just that TD didnt have access to borrow the shares to short and maybe another broker would have? The stock I was trying to short is EWZ and there is a TON of liquidity/volume in the market yesterday. Thx for any help.

For example check that one FEMKX
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/pm?s=FEMKX
on 1 month TRAILING RETURNS (%) is -2.74 but when I checked
the chart of the last month it kept coming up.
How it can be negative? I'm sure there is a good reason but I don't get it. Any ideas why? Thanks!

when a company pays dividends. why is it that cash (asset) decrease and dividends increase? i understand why cash decrease because the company has to pay out. however, wouldn't dividends decrease because dividends is paid out, thus the company's worth or owner equity decreases?

I am investing in stocks and i am trying to make a somewhat orginized paper with many details about the stock. I was wondering what i would have to do to find out how much a stock has grown (percentage wise) over a 52-week period. I will use GOOG as an example, 52 weeks ago it was at 400.25 and now it is at 567.5, how would I find out how much the stock has grown(percentage wise)? ex. it has grown 15% over the past year. that sort of form

I was in the process of signing up for a trading account with zecco, when it asked me for a Government ID number. This field was in the middle of a few drivers license questions, so i figured that it was my DL number. It had a separate field for a S.S. number. When i went to confirm, it asked me to verify that i entered my correct Taxpayer ID number under penalty of perjury. This is when I got confused. Did I enter the correct numbers? I am only 19 and I have never filed taxes, simply because I've never had a job "on the books", so I don't know of any other ID numbers. Help would be appreciated. I really don't want to go to federal prison today... I'd like to save that for when i get enough experience for insider trading!!! That was a Joke....
