I read many answers to these kind of questions but still not sure.
For example there is IPO that suppose to be sold around $20.
Tdameritrade say i can put day/limit order in the day before the IPO goes on market, or purchase them when they go on secondary market.

Do I just call a broker up a put a day/limit order at $20? or do I have to put it higher bid?

Tdameritrade say I can trade online when the stock goes on secondary market. is that same thing as launching date of IPO?
Thanks~!

I've been thinking about investing in the stock market but I need some clues on how it actually works and how do I get the most out of it.
I want to start slowly with a small amount of money.

What do you recommend and suggest?

Does face value make any difference to the share price? In two stocks having same EPS but different face values, should the price of both be equal assuming all other things equal?

For myself I have KO,WFC,VTI,WMT,AGG. Each has $1000 worth of shares.

For my 5 y rold she has vTI, Spdr , qqqq, KO and AGG. I also bought $1000 share of each for her.

Is her portfolio good enough to where she will have enough for college by the time she is 18 and is mine good for some extra money on the side?

Threw $3,000 into a mutal fund with my bank but I started thinking about complicated this might actually be. What do I need to know about investing like this? And how much harder is it going to be for me when it comes time to file my taxes?

Anyone else feel as if the subprime mortgage problem is being taking a little too seriously? To be honest I'm not even sure there is a problem. Anyone here not able to pay off their mortgage because they bought too much house?

So everytime a stock is sold at a profit you have to pay 15% tax on what you made? What if you're reinvesting that money in something else?

Are there any loopholes to paying taxes on capital gains?

I want to pay no more than 21 for a stock, but I want to get the best price. If I place a limit order of 21 and the stock price happens to be 19.50, will I get the stock at 19.50 or will I be paying 21 for the stock?

If the market goes down (like now) you can make profits by short selling, and if the market is going up you can just buy the stocks and make profits as well.

Is that correct?

Too much easy money is what led to skyrocketing house prices and the current financial troubles in the economy. And this makes me wonder if the huge loans central banks gave to private banks in the last couple of days are only going to prolong this situation and perhaps make it worse in the long run?

Private banks will hide their bad loans for a while longer and perhaps even lend some more to people who can't pay. But in the end they'll have to come clean anyway?

It's not just ours.. Japan and Europe as well. Someone give me a more complex answer as to why all this is going on or your thoughtful opinion on it. The news treats us like idiots it seems and I would like a more thorough explanation.

"Stratasys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SSYS) said that its board has approved a 2-for-1 stock split of the company's common stock, to be effected in the form of a common stock dividend.
Each shareholder of record at the close of business on Aug. 15 will receive one additional share for every outstanding share held on that date." - Reuters

Does that mean if I have 100 shares worth $50 each, it will become 200 shares worth $25 each? I don't understand the "common stock dividend" part.

I have been trading in stock markets for 15 years now. Due to an illness during college I have been left with virtually no capital of my own to trade with. I am looking for sources of capital that I could trade with, like an investor. I could easily generate over 30% per year on any money I could get. I only trade stocks no commodities or currency.
