I just hate the idea of buying high. Granted, this is for a long term investment (20 years) but I would hate to buy in at the current highs and have to wait 15 years for any substantial gains.

What is the general view that a new investor looking to put new money into the stock market should do? Is now the worst time to invest in an index fund?

Thanks.

I always hear of dow returns and dow returns with dividends included. Does the price given reflect that?

I would think no, but then I went here:

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=%5EDJI

and it shows the adjusted close is the same as the regular close. So are dividends included?

I have an Excel list of a thousand different stocks, and I want the historic opening and closing stock prices to be automatically updated on that Excel list. Doing this manually is extremely tedious. Is there any Excel functionality or plug-in that will enable me to grab the updated stock prices automatically from a website (e.g. Yahoo Finance)?

i know absolutely nothing about the stock market, but i would like to buy a few shares of some companies and see what happens, i don't want to spend a huge amount of money and i really don't want to get involved with a stock broker.

so can i buy and sell shares without a stock broker?

Suncity Equities and Investments, who utilize the very lucrative worldwide arbitrage trading market to generate risk-free daily profits, can guarantee clients significantly higher returns than those offered by banks and other financial institutions.

Today we saw a +$9 jump in Aur Resources Inc. (TSX: AUR.TO) shares due to the take over by Teck Cominco. How could one possibly predict that? I mean what were the signs? The only thing that I've managed to find is that Teck Cominco had recently appointed a senior VP PD. But that's about it.

Thanks.

Okay, so this is what I understand so far. An IRA is like a shoebox and my investments are the shoes. And the shoebox is what shelters me from the taxes. And there are penalties if I were to withdraw early before I retire. So this would mean it would be a long term investment, right?

If so.. can someone recommend a mutual fund or stock I can put my money into as a long term investment? Or should I just go with a money market savings? Any other suggestion inputs welcome.

Pharmaceuticals and other tech. companies aside, is it really hard to spot winners like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Dell Computers, and the like before their stock takes off? (especially those companies whose services we easily understand)

Wasn't the upcoming success of these companies easy to see? What did people have to say about these companies way back in the day when they first began? "Best Buy is financially strong and is growing aggressively, but there's no reason to think the stock will soar..." (?)

Any thoughts appreciated.
