Whats a positive statement to submit .. and what if any weight does it give to prospective creditors?

I'm a tax accounting student. There's this one part in the chapter business and hobbies that I find odd:

"An activity (that does not involve horses) is profit-seeking if it shows a profit in at least 3 of any 5 consecutive years ending with the taxable year in question."

Can someone help me out deciphering this text? It doesn't explain it further in the book. What's up with the horses? Why not cows or sheep?

What is usually the minmum, to the max rate that a realtor, such as Prudential, or Century 21 makes off of the selling of your home? Is 3-6% higher? Just curious before I start selling. I am looking for employment which I can conduct from my home office. My experience leans towards recruiting, scheduling and people managing since my last employer was a large demonstrating/marketing company where I was employed as an area manager..
