If it's just a run of the mill job that doesn't require much skill or experience, will they check your references or is it just a formality to have you list them? Also, if they ask to contact a previous or current employer, do you need their permission?

This is for a credit card account I stopped paying a year ago. They have called my parents' home (I don't live there) and told them what was going on. They revealed personal details about the account. At this time I don't have money to pay or offer a settlement. I have no assets. They keep callming my parents' house and sending threatening letters. Can anyone offer advise?

What is the psychological basis of the screaming commercial? I assume that the Oxyclean type of TV ad must have been well thought out by agency advertisng psychologists to deserve the ongoing ads.

If there are any published papers in the psychological or psychiatric literature on the effects of and the responses to screaming, I would appreciate the journal reference.

I realize that screaming does get one's initial attention, but why would one continue to listen to the blatant rudeness and what is the sales rational?

IT'S LIKE AN E-MAIL ALL IN CAPS - BOLD - UNDERLINED which is considered rude and immediately prompts the delete button....without reading the message! It gets a moment of negative attention prior to the deletion

I was laid off from my corporate america job of 5 years once the company went through a reorganization about a year ago. About 2 years before being given the door, I was charged with a DWI. Now, I am having a heck of a time procuring employment. I should, and, could be a consultant in my field, but, the state regulates the licensing, and, says that I am not eligible for my consulting license for another 2 years due to the DWI. For the record, I fought the DWI as long as I could without it interfering with work, or, my parenthood (single dad). I've been told that companies look at DWI's on a case-by-case basis, and, that misdemeanors shouldn't disqualify me. I've only had one offense in my nearly 40 years of living, it just so happens mine was a DWI, and it's costing me big time. Any advice, and/or, ideas on where to turn are greatly appreciated. I am trying to make a career change, and I come up against interviewers who think they know better than I do what it is I want. I want more challenge and a different set of people to work with, yet they always think I will be bored.

I am a 45 yrs old, with a husband a 2 children ages 19 and 17. I never received any training formal or informal on finances. I came to this Country and did not know how pensions and retirement plans worked, I did not know about planing for the future(kid's college/retirement), until about 12-15 yrs ago.Once I realized that these are aspects of life that we need to take care off, I started to read and look for answers. I have been contributing to a retirement plan at work. For years I have done things, such as not buying new cars to avoid being in debt, but have found myself paying a lot of money to maintain used cars.
I feel that at my age I still do not have a good grip on my finances. We have never tried to "keep up" with the neighbors,we live from pay check to pay check, do not go after luxuries but do not have basic things such as a decent living room set. Our house needs maintainance but we do not have the money to do it and do not want to get debt we would not be able to pay.HELP!

My husband's mother was contacted by a representive of Banker's Life trying to sell her an annuity that would preserve her assets "for the kids" in case she would need nursing home care.
She is 84 and is nearing the time when she will no longer be able to live on her own. She is not a wealthy woman and I believe any money she does have should go for her care.
Does anyone know anything about this type of annuity?
Costs, penalties for early surrender, is it even legal?
