As we look around at our modern world, we can't help but notice the mass communication capabilties we have: cell phones, ipods, and computers.

Is this a better world than our grandparents lived in?

Will generations from now see as entrepeneurs of the human spirit, or a self-absorbed society waiting to see the next Janet Jackson nipple?

There are no explanations for how the brain produces consciousness (If it is the brain that does this). We have all heard of our "inner selves". When our senses pick up images and sounds what are these images and sounds being reported to? In other words how is our "inner self" produced by the brain? Another way of looking at the "inner self" problem is to say - what produces the you in you?

Are you ever curious as to whether had you been born in an Islamic country you would be just as committed Muslims as you are Christians having been born in a Christian country. Would you not be espousing the Koran as the word of God rather than the bible? Would you not be regarding Jesus as a prophet rather than the son of God as you now do? How do you know your beliefs are true when they are clearly a product of where you were born?

IF SOMEONE DIES OF SOMETHING FIXABLE LIKE ROOM RUNNING OUT OF AIR AND ASFIXIATES. AFTER BEING DEAD FOR A FEW HOURS, CAN SCIENTISTS REVIVE THIS PERSON BY RESTARTING HIS HEART AND WITH AN AIR TUBE. SEEMS WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO REVIVE PEOPLE ONCE THEY ARE FIXED. AND THEIR SOULS SHOULD RETURN, NO? IS THIS PROOF THERE IS A SOUL?

In his book "Misogyny: The World's Oldest Prejudice", the late journalist Jack Holland gives a history of the evolution of the hatred of women, and basically asserts that its origin is man's fear of "what women would do if they were free to do it". How can women at last be freed from the cruelty and oppression they have suffered for so long?

In my ethics class we talked a lot about Cultural Relativism. To me it seems insane to think there is a set objective set of moral values. I think something is moral because the society you live in has deemed it moral. So along those lines, in societies where they think killing is ok, then killing is morally right. From the perspective of OUR society it is wrong...But in relation to theirs it is right. There is no set standard we can judge both our views by and say whose is "right." This always seemed common sense to me even before this class. My question, however, is do most Philosophers feel the same as me (morality is subjective) or do they feel morality is objective? Thanks.

James tells us that our faith - without works - is dead. Paul tells us that our faith alone guarantees our salvation. I understand there is a balance - but when do I know my works have sufficiently demonstrated my faith?

You know, from the Greek, "sophia" means wisdom. So, why the sophists received this label, given that they were not wise people, but a bunch of professionals on eloquency?
