I find that this is an indication that we are no longer able to live in a social context. We have become so insular with our home theatres, home computers and SUVs that we have forgotten how to speak and ineract with one another.

We have all read that the remarks made by Pope Benedict 16 was not taken favourably by Muslims all over the world... and he was condemned for it...
Why can't the muslims get their facts straigthened out and explain to non muslims the truth about their religion and instead fight with violence? Isn't it time that they should educate so that others will understand and accept them instead of threatening with terrorism? Could it be that they are not sure of themselves or their existence?

Hi I'm hopefully going to study english at university next year, as another choice of course on my application I was considering english with philosophy, philosophy has always intrigued me & I've always been a very deep thinker, I know I would enjoy studying it & I know thinking about prospective employment is rather antithetic to the whole philosophy ideal. But, would a philosophy degree imediately turn employers off? It was a very real consideration until my lovely b/f decided to tell me the joke 'What is the one question philosophy students ask after graduation, do you want fries with that?' Unfunny & unsupportive I know but there does seem to be a stigma attached to philosophy degrees, I know in an ideal world we should persue the subjects that give us the greatest personal fulfillment, however, with the vast student loans we have to contend with in the U.K the career prospects have to be considered. Do philosophy degrees close doors, any advice?

if you had a tombstone that is! Personally, i request to be cremated in a field and scattered in the wind with no markings of any kind.

Maybe they could write "stardust" on my imaginary tombstone!

“Any society that would give up a little liberty for a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” - Benjamin Franklin. What do you think of this quote?

In the US, we live in a relatively stable, prosperous country and time period in comparison to a lot of underdeveloped or developing countries - in general, people have more money than before; houses are bigger; we have advanced healthcare and education systems; we are able to travel to different places, enjoy good food, have roofs over our heads and have all the gadgets we need to make life more convenient. I'm not saying that those things equal happiness or well-being, but isn't it kind of odd that with all of these things there are so many people that are still depressed in the US? Do you think there are an equal proportion of depressed people in underdeveloped or developing countries? I think the fact that we live in a consumerist society may have to do something with depression, ie, the more we get the more we want, and in turn we are never satisfied. What do you think?

Intelligent people, i have found are typically less happy. The reason for this is simple;they are better able to rationalize their delusions. The ability to stomach truth has little to do with intelligence-nothing in fact. The intellect is far better at arguing away truths than at finding them.

For me, it is a benevolence born of understanding rather than forgiveness, as though i can see through the delinquent rush of thought and passion to the still point of innocence within each soul. I use words mostly to do this, analogies that sieze the reality of a person and burn it clean from the inside out. For me this is active compassion.
