If he won't practice, then he is showing a lack of support for the band, which is supposed to be a group.
Yes, I think it's time to get a new bassist. Your friend will be hurt, but your band is suffering from his laziness.

These things are a common problem with bands. Whose band is it? is one question that constantly comes up, because if it weren't for the other guys, there would be no band. And a band is obviously a cooperative effort and even though the members may not even have known each other at the start, the activity of a band brings about a relationship and bonding and so forth...it is a "personnel management" nightmare.
So go with the facts. The band is a cohesive group, with relationships, and discipline should be through peer pressure and group interactions as much as possible. Talk it over with the other members, and have everyone talk to the guy.
If that doesn't do it, talk to him about what the band hopes to achieve and ask him what he hopes to achieve by being in the band. If what he says matches what the band hopes, explain that the band needs him to get with it more, and if what he says doesn't match, ask him to bow out....

If you are going to work with friends no matter what job it may be there has to be 2 relationships, a personal one and a professional one. These have to be kept separate. Have a talk with your friend and explain to him that he needs to start practicing or he will be replaced. Make sure that the other members in the band feel the same way and approach it as a "band issue" not a personal one.
Or.....tell him to put himself in your shoes and ask him what he would do if he had to deal with another band member that didn't want to practice. That might work.
Good luck!

Your "best friend" would not be abusing his friendship with you, by being lazy and irresponsible.
As his "best friend" you could sit him down privately, tell him you appreciate his talent, and want to keep him as a friend.
Tell him YOU FEEL that he is taking advantage.of his situation. That YOU FEEL he is not serious, or that the others are unhappy with his lack of commitment. He might not like hearing it, but he can't argue with how YOU FEEL.
Tell him if he wants to remain with the group he need to show effort and to make a commitment to the MUSIC.
If he doesn't want to do that, it's his call-make it. Shake hands and move on.
Tell him you hope you can remain friends when he leaves.
If he chooses to stay, then welcome him, and don't make a big deal out of him getting to practice. He is just keeping his word.
If he makes a commitment, repeat at the first missed practice.
Usually, it is less of a hassle, and harder on a friendship to just sh&^-can him right off.
Business doesn't have to make you a heartless BASt&^% or a pushover for "friends."
PS I like wundr's idea, too. A little competition might straighten him up. Or piss him right outta there.

Friends dint make good band members. They will take there friendship to mean that they can get away with anything. All the good bands did not start out as friends, just a group of people with good talent. Sack him but be prep aired to lose him as a friend.

Before you decide to boot him to the curb, try talking to him. Tell him in a calm sort of way, that if he doesn't practice to meet up to the potential of the band, that he can no longer be a member of your band.

Give him a severe final warning..........if he does not comply, sack him............ Add there the band and friendship are two different matters. If he is your best friend, he will not hold it against you as he apparently does not give two hoots for the band........
