For me, it is a benevolence born of understanding rather than forgiveness, as though i can see through the delinquent rush of thought and passion to the still point of innocence within each soul. I use words mostly to do this, analogies that sieze the reality of a person and burn it clean from the inside out. For me this is active compassion.

Compassion is not sentiment but is making justice and doing works of mercy. Compassion is not a moral commandment but a flow and overflow of the fullest human and divine energies. --(Matthew Fox)

We can measure anything that exists! However, many things that we believe exist (for example, compassion) do not exist. What do we mean by this? Compassion is a word for a number of attitudes and behaviors toward other people that have been so labeled. We can't measure compassion but we can measure those behaviors. Compassion is a construct you cannot measure constructs directly. However, this construct (like many others) has indicators, expressed in behaviors, that you can measure. However, in order to measure these behaviors, you need to operationally define them! You need to move from construct or concept to a variable! - (anonymous author)

Compassion for me is the ability to see and celebrate the best in another person. It is the recognition of all that is beautiful about that person. I liken it to the relationship between the nun and the death row prisoner on the movie "Dead Man Walking" Inspite of his vicious crime, she saw something beautiful in this man. It is like seeing God in that person, and one cannot help but respond with love.

Compassion is two things to me. One would be an awareness of something someone might be going through that is causing them pain or suffering. The other half of compassion is the desire to help them through this pain or suffering.

I think compassion is an extension of our souls. It is the essence of what being human is all about. Through our awareness, we literally stretch our souls out to merge with those of others. It is an unseen bonding that is one of the sources of our identity as a species capable of love.

compassion means feeling sorry for someone without putting them down (like pity - when you feel pity for someone you sort of feel that someone is inferior). when you understand they are going through a hard time and sympathize with them but keep them at an equal level with you, no matter how hard of a time they are having.

Giving care and understanding to another. Letting them know you are always there for them. Giving them a feeling of worth and love.

For me, compassion is seeing yourself in the other person's situation and thus be moved to either help or sympathize.
