How was it exactly?
How did the people live?
Was it prety much like a feudal land (serfdom working the land) still in the early 1800's?
How and exactly when did it form into a single country?
Before it became a united country, how did people living in say Bavaria say where they were from? Did they say "I am Bavarian from Bavaria" or did they say "I am Deutch from Deutchland"?

In the September 18, 1858 debate, Lincoln said:

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.

If you were able to solve any mystery from the past, which one would it be? I think I would like to know the true circumstances and the actual killers of John F. Kennedy.

The list goes on, how did they build the pyramids, who was Jack the Ripper, where is Lord Lucan, etc.

The Civil War marked one of the great points in American history by demonstrating how deeply the nation was divided on the basis of politics and region. The presidential election of 1896 may also be seen as a major dividing along political and regional lines. To what degree does this continued division suggest continuity over time or change? Simply because the divisions persist in appearance, do they necessarily exist for the same reason? What developments over the years contributed to this difference between the regions that shows up so starkly in political terms? To what degree did the emergence of an urban, industrial and wage-dependent labor force alter the American social and political landscape?
