Well, Texas was a part of Mexico for a time. Outsiders were brought in to settle the area. After a while, they bristled under Mexican laws the felt to be unfair and declared independence. The most famous battle of the Texas independence war--more famous even than the deciding battle at San Jacinto--was the seige of the Alamo. Some 90 Texans holed themselves up at the mission El Alamo de San Antonio. They hoped to fight off Santa Anna's army, but they didn't have he supplies to hold out. at least 70 of them were killed. Thus the battle cry of the Texans became "Remember the Alamo!" After Texas gained its Independence, it was its own republic for a time. After ten years, it finally gained admittance to the United States. It is one of few states that were their own countries.
