Didn't Lincoln give Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the freedom to announce that he even had a dream? So why was the post office closed on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's. birthday but is open today on Lincoln's birthday?

The Post Office is closed on Martin Luther King Day, not his birthday, his birthday does happen to be that same week. But we don't celebrate that. We do celebrate a selected day for him. Sometimes wrongfully called his birthday.

Secondly, the Post Office is closed a day, Presidents Day, in memorium to all Presidents Past.

The government chose simply to have one holiday to honor all of presidents. If they were going to have a special holiday just for Lincoln, they would also need to have one for Washington, and probably a number of others.

And, since Lincoln died nearly a hundred years before Dr. King became well-known, I wouldn't say that Lincoln gave King anything. Slavery was not a system that was going to last in this country during the Industrial Revolution. Lincoln was a great president, but he only helped bring about the inevitable.
