A fief is part of feudalism, which is the way countries were run in the middle ages. The king was at the top and then below him were barons and below them knights. A fief was a piece of land with a manor house and land held by a knight. It was quite big, about the size of 4 or 5 farms.

Under the system of feudalism, a fiefdom, fief, feud, feoff, or fee, often consisted of inheritable lands or revenue-producing property granted by a liege lord in return for a form of allegiance, originally to give him the means to fulfill his military duties when called upon. However anything of value could be held in fief, such as an office, a right of exploitation (e.g., hunting, fishing) or a revenue rather than the land it comes from.

As it is for your homework, I'm not going to help you other than say do a search on the word 'fief' or 'fiefdom'. When I googled I received over 64,000 results. I will also tell you that it is not a musical instrument per the first answer - that's a fife!
