1. History unofficially begins in 1619 when 19 indentured servants arrive in Jamestown.
2. One-by-one all colonies adopt slavery and have slaves performing a variety of tasks with the majority concentrated in the South
3. Following Bacon's Rebellion (1676) the practice of indentured servitude ends as slaves appear to be the best labor force for the colonies.
4. By 1660, most colonies have OFFICIALLY adopted slavery and written slave codes into their laws.
5. In 1787 the Constitution is written without any mention of ending slavery
6. 1793 Eli Whitney invents the cotton engine (gin) and slavery is here to stay
7. 1831 Nat Turner, a slave, organizes and leads an unsuccessful rebellion
8. 1859 John Brown, a northerner attempts to organize slaves in a massive rebellion but is caught and hanged
9. Lincoln is elected president and the Civil War begins the following year.
10. The 13th Amendment is passed at the end of the Civil War and slavery is officially outlawed in America.
