One of the answers to another question said this. I'm pretty farmilar with the world but I don't know what this means. Maybe I am simply misunderstanding the answer.

I know many experts tell us that surnames have been around since the Norman Conquest in 1066, but they didn't become hereditary until anywhere from the 1200s to the 1400s, depending on class and where on lived in England. That's a wide range of years, so I was curious if any of you could narrow that down considerably. For instance, when did the common peasant in middle England start passing his last name down to his children?

I found out that my great-grandmother was a Huron Indian and this was hidden by my family for years. I would really like to learn more, are there any Hurons out there who can tell me where I can go (I'm in Ontario) to speak with an elder and learn about my heritage? Also, can I be accepted into a community like this when I have no previous knowlegdge and only one distant relation who is Native?

I am looking for a cousin who was given to HRS (now called DCF) back when i was 11 years old. I am now 38. I would really like to find her and reunite with her. I dont have the money to go through expensive search sites so im looking for a free way. I did find a address listed under her name with a phone number but it was disconnected. Any ideas?

I am trying to find out how I can trace the whereabouts of my half brother and sister, who were adopted. Are there any organisations I can contact? And does their adoption cause a problem tracing them? Please help, I would really love to find them.
