I am looking for old Merchant Marine records. Can anyone tell me where to look? I am looking for my great-grandfather's MM records if they are available. He passed in 1917 at the ripe old age of 31. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a million!

I am in search for my biological father, his name is Gerald Carter ( info i have on him he was in military, and a black belt) and lived in the Richmond Va area. His grandmother resided in Blackwell Court back in the late 60's early 70's. He never knew my mother was pregnant with me(my grandmother chased him away) he went away to the military before my mom could tell him about me that was 35 years ago. Any suggestions anyone! Thanks for the help.
P. S. I have written letters, called the church, checked with military, etc. I am at my ropes end of giving up.

My father was adopted in the 1950s. He apparently knew who his biological parents were, but to protect his adoptive parents, never persued them. He died before he could tell me anything about them. He was adopted in Kentucky, which has closed adoptions and the only thing Frankfurt can tell me without a court order is that he had siblings and his mother was Native American. How do I go about getting more information about my biological family? Any ideas would be great!!

Hi,
My sister recovered her Family Tree Maker files from a doomed harddrive.. she was using a software from gspsoftware.co.uk (I think) since I found the files on her disc to have the *.gft extension
Now I bought her the software called Family Tree Maker 2006 but this can't read her files ! And i do not know where to get the other version, but it looks like it should be the same. This is so confusing. Can you please help? Can someone tell me if I can convert that format to the new one? Or what to do ? Thanks!

Many people like myself are trying to trace their family roots. In a women's magazine that I buy just about every week, a website (www.rootsweb.com) is listed as free. It's free for just a trial period. After the trail period, if you don't contact them in time, you will be charged by Ancestry.com.

Something else...the contacting MUST be done by phone.

A word to the wise...

I met my mother this year, I was taken from her when I was 3 months old, she told me that her mother was native american, and that I am 1/4 native american, but she was not sure as to what Nation, because she was given up for adoption when she was very young, and has very limited info on her mother, so my question is, where can I find out if my family is native american, and to as what tribe or nation I am from !

I can only trace my direct male line back to c. 1823, to the bastard son of one Hannah Bridgwaters of Stoke, St. Milborough, Shropshire, from whom we got our surname. I want to find out whether my y-chromosone is originally Saxon, Nordic or Celtic in origin and perhaps discover what my true surname should be and who the father of Thomas Bridgwater (b.c.1823) was.

Also, my mother may have Native American ancestors and I would very much like to take an ethnicity test to determine whether this is true or false. Are there any ways that I can get free genetic testing?

Hi guys, I'm in Australia and I'm interested in family history. My last name is Hassett but the actual full name is Blenner Hassett. I know there was an actress in the US in the 60s called Marilyn Hassett and I know there was someone called Harmon Blenner Hassett (mentioned in the book Gangs of New York) who had a son who lived in the five points where the movie Gangs of New York was set and he died in the five points area. The Blenner hassett family came from Ireland in County Kerry - some were sent over to Australia as convicts and others obviously settled in America - predominantly New York it would seem. Can anyone direct me in the right direction as to where I can find info about my family ancestors who settled in America?

I was adopted as an infant at a time when all adoptions were "closed." As a mother, I feel it is important to know what my roots are and what medical conditions I could pass on to my kids. Does anyone know how I can get the information I need?

We also hear "first cousin second removed". What exactly does this mean as in family relations to us ? We know we have cousins, aunts, uncles, etc... but please explain where this "first & second" label comes from or how it fits in the family tree scheme.
