Many people like myself are trying to trace their family roots. In a women's magazine that I buy just about every week, a website (www.rootsweb.com) is listed as free. It's free for just a trial period. After the trail period, if you don't contact them in time, you will be charged by Ancestry.com.

Something else...the contacting MUST be done by phone.

A word to the wise...

Roots Web IS free - but some of their pages have subtle advertisements for Ancestry.com, a subscription site. The advertisements that ask for names and dates. If you stay clear of them, you won't have to sign up for a trial offer.

I have been using Roots Web for 8 years, for free.

The magazine writer was either misled or bone stupid.

There are ads for Ancestry on both sides of the sub head, and another above the main head. There is an add for floor clocks on the right, too.

Scroll down to the form that asks for Surname. Try Lee, Robert, b. 1807. You'll get 800+ hits and more ads for Ancestry. Just skip them.

Rootsweb is free, but you have to pay to use some services of ancestry.com. I've used Ancestry.com since 2000/2001 (around there). Some places, like the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, subscribe to all the things on ancestry.com.

The posters below are correct. *Rootsweb* is always free; but they do have ads on there that link to pay sites such as Ancestry.

Anytime you sign up for a advertised free service, be very aware when they ask for a credit card. If free, this is not necessary.
