Hi,
My sister recovered her Family Tree Maker files from a doomed harddrive.. she was using a software from gspsoftware.co.uk (I think) since I found the files on her disc to have the *.gft extension
Now I bought her the software called Family Tree Maker 2006 but this can't read her files ! And i do not know where to get the other version, but it looks like it should be the same. This is so confusing. Can you please help? Can someone tell me if I can convert that format to the new one? Or what to do ? Thanks!

Hey The Morbid,

If you can get the GSP Software to output a .GED file, that is the recognized STANDARD for interchange of Genealogy software. The FTM will take it in. Maybe someone can take the recovered file read it in GSP, and convert to .GED. This will work.

You will probably have to find someone who uses gspsoftware.co.uk, send them her data, have them load it, then write out (export) a GEDCOM file. This is a text file that all genealogy programs can read and write. Next you'llhave to read (import) it into FTM.

gspsoftware.co.uk may have a bulletin board or user gorup. If they are still in business they may be willing to take her file in and send you a GEDCOM.

If you can't do that, you will probably be reduced to reading the data with Notepad and re-typing it all.

I think you need GSP Family Tree. I'm not sure where you live, but Amazon.com sells it for less than US$10, and Amazon.co.uk sells it for £5.00. See the links below.
