Myfamily.com offers a free family page plus tools to create a family tree on-line (well, free for 30 days, but how long do you need it if you are just going to print a tree?). So does Genealogy.com
If you already have created a family tree using family tree database software, like Family Tree Maker, the software developer may include free family tree web hosting. But, if you are using such software, you can already print family trees.
If you have a lot of family tree information that you've already collected, but are not using a genealogical program, consider using a free program like Personal Ancestral File (PAF), which you can download from the familysearch.org web site. That will allow you to print your family tree.

They have access to a lot of digitized records like birth, death, marriage registries, ocean liner passenger lists, telephone directories, national census records. So if you have an uncommon name, you can find it fairly easily. "John Smith", it's a bit harder. They don't have good records for all centuries for all countries. Around 1840-1940 in Britian is OK. They don't access records for living people, so you can't go very recent. Some of the registries don't give exact dates, only quarter-year. I think you can sometimes buy copies of individual birth/death certificates through the site. Then they cross-search with other members and give you hints if it looks like your John Doe born in Durham in 1912 is the same as their J. Doe born in Durham on 1 April 1912, so you can merge information if you trust the other member's data. You can also contact other members, same as Y!A. They are adding more digitized docments all the time, so just because they don't have some particular record yet, doesn't mean they won't sometime. You can also import and export GEDCOM files (Mormon data format used by most genealogy software). It's not perfect, but it mostly works.
