The oldest person I have heard of living not far from me is a guy of 106. He is by no means the oldest person alive on Planet Earth today. The oldest person I ever knew was a guy called John Francis whom I worked with back in 1966. He was 108 and still working. He had been a horse drawn tram driver in Victorian London. I learnt a great deal about Victorian London from him. For example, he used to drive a horse drawn tram from the City of London which went all the way out to Muswell Hill. How did they get the tram up this steep hill? According to John there was a team of powerful shire horses which were used to pull trams up the hill as they waked slowly down with the tram hooked up to a two inch thick wire rope set into a channel in the road. If you go up Muswell Hill you can still see the horses drinking toughs at the side of the road, made of stone.

There's only one person in the world older than Bertrand - a Puerto Rican man who is 26 days older, the French-language newspaper reported on Saturday.

The 128 year old dominican woman died in 2004. Her age was never scientically proven, and the claim of her age has been debated.

"Since the publication of the article in January 2003 Ma Pampo died in 2004 without ever being recognised as the World's Oldest Person by the Guiness Book of World Records. Unfotunately, her death came before the scientific community could confirm her age."
