" I heard that - awful boy - telling her about them - years ago"

When petunia said this I thought like Harry, she was referring to his dad and mom. But right just now, it struck me.
In Deathly Hallows, in the chapter 'Prince's Tale', there is a scene where a young lily is told about dementors by snape..when petunia suddenly interrupts them.

Of Having and Losing...

Having is possessing,
It is far from cherishing,
As cherishing often crawls
In the state of losing.

Losing entails fearing,
Of uncertainties,
Of wanting to have,
Of yearning to belong.

Losing is enriching,
It eradicates selfishness,
Yet invites selflessness,
Oft neglected when having.

Losing is suffering,
Suffocating so solemnly,
Reminding fellow mortals,
On the art of having.

The main character of my book, an elderly American math professor, has become a hermit of sorts and is not aware of the most important world and U.S. events since about 1987....

So, here's my question:

What important events occured since 1987, that I should mention in passing?

Venus Arles, Borghese, and a few others? Are they named after the period they were sculptured or after the artist?

I just attended a musuem exhibition on Louvre exhibits, and Aphrodite statues numbered around 5 or slightly more. Some of them have manly facial features. I really liked the Venus Arles one.. can someone in the know clarify?

LOL I'll tell ya, as Ronnie said before, "Don't keep them posted here or on the net" (those that you want published by Faber & Faber) as the net yes, it a form of publication *^_^*
I have kept all your wonderful suggestions and critics and will most definately use them as revisions are a must.
I am going to post 2 at a time now as Faber wants 6 poetry samples to go by (not sure of the genre being excepted0 but, still looking into it. Ari suggested that I "read" more LOL I truly do but, I have been so busy taking certain works off the net and helping very young poets with their works *^_^*

"I've always said that if and when I walk through that open door in the publishing world, I will grab as many hands as I can and pull them through with me" and I swear by it...

A few of you requested that I send works to you for revision and critic, I am working on that, promise, just make sure your addy is available if you want to help

I love you all dearly and Thank you so much for you help *^_^*

I just finished "Cannery Row" a couple of days ago. It was the first of Steinbeck's novels that I've read.
I liked it alot.

Which Steinbeck novel would you recommend?

Phantasea

As I plunder afloat upon the silky abyss,
I wonder what really lies beneath this thin sober air.
Ill just let drift in the weeds, sails flapping and clapping,
For that who really cares and the warm waves brush over my side.

Are you in there? Can I feel what your feeling?
Are you too flowing seemlessly through the sea of transience?
Dreams, are they of liquid light and distant depth?
Do you reside inside a sunfilled chasm?

The clear blue ocean can tear us apart..
A sudden sense of fickle trickles down my spine,
But i feel sunshine, I can taste the whispering wind,
The daisy meadows fresh greens seem to agree.

As the melting buttercups flutter and nod,
And swimming with honeycomb nectar we swirl,
And in tranquil dance in a coffee cup of creamed dreams,
We paint epic burls together that just seem wander along.
