The main character of my book, an elderly American math professor, has become a hermit of sorts and is not aware of the most important world and U.S. events since about 1987....

So, here's my question:

What important events occured since 1987, that I should mention in passing?

The Berlin Wall coming down in 1989.
He may know of the Stock Market crash in 1987.
Princess Diana's death in 1997
The twin towers and all those terrorist attacks?

And the Internet and flashy mobile phones will surprise him.

And look on Wikipedia- no doubt there's loads.

I think all of the above answers are great things. Definitely the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, 9/11, etc. It's not really an event, but the gradual grow of technology since 1987 has made an impact.

Pretty much what everyone has said, the end of the Cold War

The Intifada began in 1987 but lasted until 1993 so that is pretty major.

Impeachment of President Clinton

The AIDS epidemic is much different than it was 1987 so what we know about that now.

The rise of China

that is all that is coming to mind.

All good lists above. In addition, I think a math professor from 1987 would be shocked and appalled by the rise of religious fundamentalism, whatever you think of religious fundamentalism.
