Of Mice and Men is amazing. Short and horribly sad, but it's a great story about human nature. I thought it was brilliant. Of course, if you're looking for something more "long-term," there's always Grapes of Wrath!

The Grapes of Wrath is his best. It's long, but one of the all-time great American classics, if not the classic. It was a very controversial book when it came out. The movie with Henry Fonda is excellent, although the ending is different. No one has ever attempted to make another movie from the book after that one.

East of Eden is one of my all time favorites. I love that book. Read that one next! Then watch the movie. It has James Dean in it.
