Have you ever read a book and had that philosophical quandary, have authors such as Ray Bradbury, Jules Verne, Ayn Rand and others inspire industries progression; or are they the true masters of innovation? Did they read Fahrenheit 451 and say "hey yeah, a hand scanner... lets do that!" Did they 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and decide the submarine would become common place? Have our scientists, mechanical engineers, and inventors been tearing their ideas from books one page at a time? Have authors been secretly directing society in its evolution into the future? Or is it merely a parasitic relationship?? hmmm... now if only someone would write a book about me finding a million dollars!

I'm asking because in English we have spent the last several months on the Harlem Renaissance and all their themes just seem to focus on oppression and nothing esoteric. Now we are being forced to read Their Eyes Were Watching God. The teacher is black and I am Korean and I would like to know if black literature has any real literary merit in comparison to white or Asian authors especially pertaining to Their Eyes Were Watching God.

My theory is that our western values came from Rome, Greece, Egypt, Christianity and Jews. From Judaism came Christianity. Most of the western people, Europeans and Americans white, are descendants from the Barbarians, no insult intended, that dominated the Roman Empire 14 centuries ago, converting to Christianity after emperor Constantine the Great legalized it. Because of that, the Barbarians felt "cheated" by being civilized by Christians and its founder, Jesus, was a Jew. What do you think?

The issue of the soul will always be a consideration, I know; with that, the problem is definitional--there is no "proof," authentication, scientifically-supplied evidence to sanction its existence. With machines, I'm thinking in terms of separating man from his tools in very literal ways (think Stephen Hawking and Christopher Reeve, ATMS, credit cards, Internet, communications, medicine, and so on).
