Compare George Bush to Abraham Lincoln.
As Doris Kearns Goodwin showed in her book "Team of Rivals", Lincoln surrounded himself with powerful men who strongly disagreed with him, even disliked him. Lincoln chose them for one reason: because of their competence and judgement. And look at how successful Lincoln was: he was at the helm when the Union won the Civil War.
Compare that to George W. Bush, who surrounds himself only with people who agree with him. There are so many examples, but it is clear that George W. GBush values loyalty over competence and judgement

You could talk about the Hmong people who have emigrated from Laos to the U.S.
The hmong helped the u.s. out during the vietnam war. After the war, the vietnamese and non-hmong Laotians were mad at the hmong. The Hmong were under the impression that the u.s. would welcome them with open arms and give them a hero's welcome. But that didn't happen. It was a total mess. Many Hmong were barred from coming to the u.s. for many years, they were denied veterens benefits etc...
very sad, and very current
