Written by Francis Scott Key while he observed a naval battle between Americans and the British during the War of 1812. He was inspired to write the song. He had no idea at the time that it would eventually become our national anthem.

Assuming you are talking about the United States' national anthem:

It was written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key. He wrote it about a coastal and naval battle that he witnessed in the War of 1812. He only wrote it is a poem, and it was later put to the tune of a British drinking song and even later made into the national anthem.
