I've always enjoyed contemplating the value of art. Oscar Wilde wrote that "The only reason for making a useless object is that one admire it intensely. All art is quite useless". Oscar should know. I find in his writing a supreme example of the power that art has to immortalize its subject.

"The Picture Of Dorian Gray" is Wilde's sole novel; he wrote some poetry, children's tales, and, what he is most famous for, plays, but "Dorian Gray" is his only full-length work of fiction. It's the story of a handsome artist's model who's so admired by the artist he is posing for that the artist imbues his painting with the ability to age in place of Dorian. Dorian is immortalized. What most don't realize is that Wilde was doing the same.

His love of the time(pre-Alfred Douglas) was John Gray. John Gray became Dorian Gray in the novel, & Wilde used the novel to immortalize him forever in tribute of love. Quite spiritual I say. Do you believe art has spiritual qualities? Examples?

I am having trouble with my comcast digital cable. The cable itself keeps cutting in and out and gets all distorted. The sound skips gets kind of blocklike and by that i mean looks like blocks when it messes up. Does this happen to everyone? anyway that I can fix this? Any company that would be better? thanks!

Consumer confidence in the U.S. jumped more than forecast this month to the highest level in almost six years, suggesting the June slowdown in spending may be temporary.

The New York-based Conference Board's index of confidence soared to 112.6, from a revised 105.3 the prior month. Earlier today, the Commerce Department reported that consumer spending rose 0.1 percent in June, slowing from a 0.5 percent gain in May. A measure of inflation closely watched by the Federal Reserve eased.

Confidence among Americans, whose spending accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy, is being shored up by a jobless rate that's near the lowest in six years and income gains that have outpaced inflation.

My daughter-in-law took my grandsons off down South at the weekend and got stuck due to traffic.
I have them normally in the week - school holidays included - but I got a 'phone call yesterday saying that they are back up here but that she has made "other arrangements" (Lord knows with who).
They are flying off on holiday on Saturday.
If she doesn't drop them off here in the morning as usual should I 'phone her at work to see what exactly is going on and ,more importantly,to see if they are safe? My son has been called away for his work and I don't want to bother him at this time but she just works for the sake of it.
Last time I called her at work she went crazy - like I had done something criminal!
I am really worried - should I call her?

I have this great uncle who is like, in this nursing home. He ain't never been married nor does he have kids. The nursing home is a sad, depressing, not to mention SMELLY place to visit, let alone live in. His birthday is coming up and I was thinking of hiring a stripper for him.

Do you think he'd enjoy that? He's like 90 years old.

I cannot get to the battery as the lock wont open on the key, and the battery is too drained to operate the central locking. so i can't seem to start it, anyone got any ideas?

the only thought i had was to put a charger to the main positive wires into the alternator to get some charge to the battery to trigger the central locking.

are there any jump / charge points under the bonet?

someone out there has an answer...
my question is about polar ice caps and water displacement.
i understand that when water freezes it expands around four times in sizes/volume... how does this affect its weight?
if an ice cap has a volume and wieght when frozen and displaces the water in the ocean as it floats, what happens when it melts and that weight is lifted ? ?
is the actuall amount of water released from the frozen block equal/more or less than the amount of water the frozen mass displaces ?
what im trying to say is, when its frozen and sitting in the ocean it must have the same effect as when i sit in a half filled bath of water, the water or the oceans level must rise.... when it melts, is the actual amount of water released as much as the amount the frozen mass has displaced in the first place ?
im sure the scientists have cleared this one up long ago, but to me its an unanswered question.
