These are the same people, Malayan and Chinese, However, Indonesia is by far lagging behind in providing welfare for its people. It is such a difference walking around in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore compared to Jakarta, Surabaya or Makassar. It is the dirt, the lack of services, the quality of the museums and public services in general, the restaurants, the cafés. Could the way of government cause the difference? Indonesia experienced a dictatorship for 33 years with numerous victims. During that period, and even now, the role of the army is supreme. Corruption has expanded without any check. There was hardly a critical press. There has been decent changes of government in both Malaysia and Singapore without the shedding of blood. Neither Malaysia nor Singapore have gone to the extent of invading and occupying neighbouring states like Indonesia did in 1962 with West Papua and in 1975 with Portuguese Timor. Maybe also education is a factor.
